Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for ADHD at Detroit Behavioral Institute in Michigan

In many cases the symptoms of ADHD will begin to develop before a child turns 7 years of age and often lasts well into the teenage years. A child or adolescent with ADHD may struggle in many different areas of their life, including academically, socially, and emotionally. While in school, these children tend to have a hard time staying on task, often leaving assignments incomplete. They may also have a hard time getting started on a task or tend to zone out when instructions are being given. Emotionally, children and adolescents with ADHD may display angry outbursts, which may be due to their inability to effectively communicate. Furthermore, they may engage in a number of problematic behaviors, which tend to lead to disciplinary actions being taken. If not properly treated, these symptoms could only get worse and lead to academic failure, rejection by peers, and the inability to adjust to major life changes.

While there is no cure for ADHD, there are a number of different treatment options available that will either alleviate or greatly reduce the presence of ADHD symptoms. Since each young person is different, not all treatment options will work for everyone. This is why it is often most beneficial to place a child in a residential treatment program that is able to provide a number of different specialized treatment programs that can be utilized to treat each child’s individualized issues. Furthermore, a residential care program will be able to more accurately identify a patient’s specific medication and therapeutic intervention needs. Young people who require residential care will receive treatment in a safe, secure setting surrounded by nurses and support staff who are available 24 hours a day. All patients in a residential treatment program will have the opportunity to participate in a number of different therapeutic methods that will help a young person learn more appropriate behaviors and ways of interacting with others. Parents can also take part in the treatment process, learning more about their child’s disorder and what they can do to manage behavior problems at home and help their child excel at school. With proper treatment and support a child with ADHD will see improvements in school performance, within their social relationship’s, and within their own self-esteem.

Each one of the programming options offered at Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy uses evidence-based practices, which are delivered by a highly experienced team of clinicians. Through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and behavior modification, patients receive a full continuum of care that helps ensure successful recovery.

Our residential program is broken up into seven separate units, with separate tracks offered for patients who are struggling with substance abuse problems, cognitive impairments, and significant trauma histories. Based upon the information gathered from a patient’s referral source, in addition to the information gathered through the pre-admission evaluation process, each patient will be assigned to the unit that is most appropriate for his or her identified needs. The following treatment components are incorporated into programming for all patients across all units:

Medication management: In many cases stimulant medication may be used to help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with ADHD. All of our patients meet with a psychiatrist a minimum of once each week in order to monitor the therapeutic effectiveness of any medications that may be prescribed, as well as to make any changes that may be necessary. Our doctors and psychiatrists are on-call 24/7, and our nurses and nurse practitioners are available on all units 24/7.

Individual therapy: Patients across all units meet with a therapist on a one-on-one basis for individual therapy sessions at a minimum of once per week. However, on some units, patients receive a minimum of two individual sessions per week. If needed, additional sessions can be added for any unit at any time.

Group therapy: Group therapy sessions are a major aspect of treatment here at Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy, and patients on all of our units engage in a minimum of four group sessions per week, however some units engage in more sessions than others. Group therapy sessions include process groups, psycho-educational groups, and social living skills groups. Our staff utilizes the “Thinking for Change” curriculum, which focuses on prosocial skills, emotional regulation, and self-expression. In addition to these groups, problem-solving groups are held on a daily basis, and some youth attend additional weekly substance abuse groups, as determined by their individual treatment plans.

Family therapy: Family involvement is extremely important for the overall success of a child’s treatment, which is why we implement family therapy sessions as part of the therapeutic process. The frequency of such sessions varies between units, but typically occurs either once each week or once every two weeks.

Experiential therapies: In order to provide a fully holistic approach to treatment, we offer a number of options for experiential therapies in addition to the more traditional forms of therapeutic interventions. Examples of various experiential therapies offered include:

  • Art
  • Recreation (held at a minimum of once/day)
  • Yoga (held once/week)
  • Life-skills building activities
  • Drama
  • Music
  • Team-building activities

With one location on our main campus and a second location on our north campus, Capstone is a fully accredited educational provider pursuant to Michigan Law and authorized by Detroit Public School. Every patient attends school Monday through Friday from 8:00am until approximately 2:00pm. The onsite educational services provided through Capstone use both traditional and program-modified teaching methods, offering a setting that allows our staff the flexibility to balance educational requirements and clinical needs, while also facilitating the successful transfer of educational credits and academic records.

Medical care: Medical care is available on an ongoing basis, with patients meeting with a medical doctor at a minimum of once each week. Such medical care includes physical evaluations, vision exams, dental exams, and other routine medical exams when needed.

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for ADHD

At Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy, we recognize that full recovery includes the implementation of successful discharge planning and thorough continuation of care. As such, discharge planning meetings are held for each patient at least 30 days prior to being discharged from our program. Our discharge planners work with referral sources and case managers in order to ensure that patients are comfortably transitioned into the most appropriate placement following their departure from Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy. Whether youth is transitioning back home, into a step-down program, or into an independent living situation, we make sure that all children have an established safe setting to go to. Our discharge planners maintain open communication with each patient’s referring agency’s case manager throughout their stay with us so that all transitions are completed without conflict. For those patients who need to enter into independent living environments, our staff will work with DHS in order make sure that such arrangements are fully established prior to the adolescent’s leaving our care.
