A substance abuse problem can be a difficult one to overcome. Especially if an individual is battling a mental health condition at the same time, being able to successfully recover from a chemical dependency issue can be ripe with obstacles. Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy understands that it can be exceedingly difficult for a youth to combat these concerns, which is why we proudly offer programming that helps youth defeat drug and/or alcohol problems while receiving care for any mental health issues that could be present. While experimentation with substances is common among young people, some go on to habitually abuse substances for a myriad of reasons. Our programs address these underlying causes so that young people can understand why they have resorted to using drugs and/or alcohol. Additionally, we supply ample support for every youth engaged in addiction treatment so that these young people are able to achieve favorable treatment outcomes.

Since its establishment in 2004, Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy (DBI|CA) has been providing premier treatment for a vast population of children and adolescents throughout the state of Michigan. Located in Mid Town Detroit, DBA|CA is nestled in an attractive downtown area that is located within one mile of Detroit Children’s Hospital and Detroit Medical Center, adding to our ability to provide comprehensive medical services when appropriate. With a focus on keeping youth, families, and the surrounding communities safe in order to reduce recidivism, while also teaching youth to be responsible members of society, our residential treatment programs provide supportive, therapeutic, and compassionate care for male and female children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 19 who are struggling with mental health disorders and co-occurring concerns.

Our programs have been designed for adjudicated youth, youth who have committed criminal acts, youth who are required to undergo psychiatric treatment, and non-adjudicated youth who are in need of a structured setting as they find healing from traumatic experiences and/or mental health concerns. We proudly stand out from our competitors by providing gender-specific treatment tracks, as well as specialized treatment tracks for adolescents who are struggling with substance abuse, cognitive or developmental delays, and significant traumatic backgrounds. When a child is grappling with a substance abuse problem, Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy can provide the holistic solution needed for him or her to find true healing and recovery.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for drug addiction at Detroit Behavioral Institute in Michigan

Marijuana, alcohol, cocaine, heroin, and other illicit drugs are often used and/or abused by young people. What may begin as experimentation with these substances can quickly develop into a problem if a youth begins using drugs and/or alcohol on a regular basis. When this problem is a factor is a young person’s life, academic functioning, social interactions, the ability to abstain from criminal activity, and relationships with others are known to be adversely affected. Additionally, prolonged substance use can increase a child or adolescent’s likelihood of experiencing withdrawal in the event a youth ceases his or her use of substances. Furthermore, when a young person is battling a substance abuse problem, there is an elevated risk for overdose, of which could lead to a grave outcome. Fortunately, there are treatment options that can help these individuals successfully recover from a substance abuse problem.

Oftentimes, youth who battle addiction require intensive treatment in order to overcome chemical dependency concerns. Residential treatment can offer young people this type of care, of which has proven effectiveness in helping youth achieve recovery and lasting healing. Young people who engage in this type of therapeutic programming partake in a number of support groups, of which include education on the effects of substances, that allow these youth to feel a sense of camaraderie among other children and adolescents who are working to overcome similar issues. Mental health professionals, including therapists, social workers, and psychiatrists, also provide support and beneficial interventions that can help these young people gain the tools needed to maintain recovery long after treatment is complete. By engaging in this excellent form of mental health care, children and adolescents can learn to rebuild their lives, free from the constraints of a substance abuse problem.

Based on the information received by a patient’s referral source, in addition to the information gathered through the evaluation process that takes place prior to admission, each patient will be assigned to the unit that is most appropriate to properly address his or her identified needs. The following treatment components are incorporated into programming for all patients across all units:

Medication management: In the majority of cases, psychotropic medications are implemented in order to assist in alleviating the symptoms of an existing mental health condition. All of our patients meet with a psychiatrist at a minimum of once each week in order to monitor the therapeutic effectiveness of any medications that may be prescribed, as well as to make any changes that may be necessary. Our doctors and psychiatrists are on-call 24/7, and our nurses and nurse practitioners are available on all units 24/7.

Individual therapy: Patients across all units meet with a therapist on a one-to-one basis for individual therapy sessions at a minimum of once per week. However, on some units, patients receive a minimum of two individual sessions per week, yet additional sessions can be added on any unit at any time.

Group therapy: Group therapy sessions are a major aspect of treatment here at Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy, and patients on all of our units engage in a minimum of four group sessions per week, although some units engage in more sessions than do others. Group therapy sessions include process groups and psycho-educational groups, as well as social living skills groups. Our staff utilizes the “Thinking for Change” curriculum, which focuses on prosocial skills, emotional regulation, and self-expression. In addition to these groups, problem-solving groups are held on a daily basis, and some youth attend additional weekly substance abuse groups, as determined by their individual treatment plans.

Family therapy: Keeping in mind the importance of family involvement in a child’s overall success in treatment, we implement family therapy sessions as part of the therapeutic process. The frequency of such sessions varies amongst units, as well as based on patients’ individual needs, but typically occurs either once each week or once every two weeks.

Experiential therapies: In order to provide a fully holistic approach to treatment, here are DBI|CA, we offer a number of options for experiential therapies that are included in each patient’s treatment plan in addition to the more traditional forms of therapeutic interventions. Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for drug addiction

At Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy, we recognize that full recovery is reliant upon successful discharge planning and thorough continuation of care. As such, discharge planning meetings are held for each patient at least 30 days prior to being discharged from our program. Our discharge planners work with referral sources and case managers in order to ensure that patients are comfortably transitioned into the most appropriate placement following their departure from Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy. Whether youth is transitioning back home, into a step-down program, or into an independent living situation, we make sure that all children have an established setting to go to in order provide them with the sense of safety that they need to remain successful. Our discharge planners maintain open communication with each patient’s referring agency’s case manager throughout their stay with us so that all transitions are completed without conflict. For those patients who need to enter into independent living environments, our staff will work with DHS in order make sure that such arrangements are fully established prior to the adolescent’s leaving our care.
