Why consider treatment for conduct disorder at Detroit Behavioral Institute in Michigan
The behavioral problems associated with conduct disorder will cause a young person to experience significant impairments in many areas of their lives, including his or her academic, social, and family functioning. It is common for many youth with this behavioral health disorder to have a difficult time processing and expressing empathy or remorse in addition to problems reading social cues. These difficulties can lead a young person to misinterpret the actions of others as hostile and respond by escalating the situation into unnecessary conflict. This aggressive behavior can result in physical harm to the child and/or others around the child. Additionally, conduct disorder tends to be associated with other problems such as substance abuse and engagement in other risk-taking behavior. This will only make the situation worse by possibly exacerbating their current symptoms. If you think that your child may have conduct disorder, the sooner this disorder is identified and treated, the better the outcome.
Treatment for conduct disorder will depend upon the specific symptoms that a child is displaying, as well as the extent to which their behavior is affecting their ability to function on a daily basis. Since each child or adolescent with conduct disorder is going to require their own individualized approach to treatment many parents have found residential treatment programs to be the most effective option because they are able to provide a number of therapeutic services in one setting. A residential treatment program will be able to conduct a thorough evaluation of your child in order to determine their exact treatment needs and to be able to provide them with the most effective form of medication. Additionally, while in a residential treatment setting each child will be monitored 24 hours a day in order to ensure complete safety of each patient. All patients in a residential treatment program will have the opportunity to participate in a number of different therapeutic methods that aim to reduce undesirable behaviors. Treatment may also include family members, providing them with education about basic parenting skills and management for a disturbed child.

Our residential program is broken up into seven separate units, with separate tracks offered for patients who are struggling with substance abuse problems, cognitive impairments, and significant trauma histories. Based upon the information gathered from a patient’s referral source, in addition to the information gathered during our pre-admission evaluation process, each patient will be assigned to the unit that is most appropriate for his or her identified needs. The following treatment components are incorporated into programming for all patients across all units:
Medication management: All of our patients meet with a psychiatrist a minimum of once each week in order to monitor the therapeutic effectiveness of any medications that may be prescribed, as well as to make any changes that may be necessary. Our doctors and psychiatrists are on-call 24/7, and our nurses and nurse practitioners are available on all units 24/7.
Individual therapy: Patients across all units meet with a therapist on an individual basis with a minimum of once per week. However, on some units, patients receive a minimum of two individual sessions per week. If needed, additional sessions can be added for any unit at any time.
Group therapy: Group therapy sessions are a major aspect of treatment here at Detroit Behavioral Institute – Capstone Academy, and patients on all of our units engage in a minimum of four group sessions per week, however some units engage in more sessions than others. Group therapy sessions include process groups, psycho-educational groups, and social living skills groups. Our staff utilizes the “Thinking for Change” curriculum, which focuses on prosocial skills, emotional regulation, and self-expression. In addition to these groups, problem-solving groups are held on a daily basis, and some youth attend additional weekly substance abuse groups, as determined by their individual treatment plans.
Family therapy: Family involvement is extremely important for the overall success of a child’s treatment, which is why we implement family therapy sessions as part of the therapeutic process. The frequency of such sessions varies between units, but usually occurs either once each week or once every two weeks.
Experiential therapies: In order to provide a fully holistic approach to treatment, we offer a number of options for experiential therapies in addition to the more traditional forms of therapeutic interventions. Examples of various experiential therapies offered include:
- Life-skills building activities
- Team-building activities
- Recreation (held at a minimum of once/day)
- Yoga (held once/week)
